Visa, Google and Stripe All Want to Be How Agents Pay. Who's Building What?

If the agent payment news of 2026 left you with a list of acronyms and no clear picture, this is the map.
Two different jobs
Most of the confusion clears once you separate two kinds of purchase.
Agents shopping for people. Your assistant books a flight or reorders groceries. The amounts are ordinary, the buyer is a consumer, and cards work fine.
Agents buying from machines. Your agent pays another service a fraction of a cent for one lookup, thousands of times a day. Card fees and card minimums make this impractical.
Different companies are solving different halves.
The card networks
- Visa launched Intelligent Commerce Connect on 8 April 2026, a single integration for accepting agent-initiated payments across several protocols. On 10 June it announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring Visa payments, with spending limits and fraud controls, to ChatGPT.
- Mastercard offers Agent Pay, which uses tokens made for agents so purchases can be tracked and authenticated.
Both focus mainly on the first job: agents buying on behalf of cardholders.
Google and the retailers
Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol on 11 January 2026 with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It gives agents a common way to talk to any merchant. Its companion, the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), records what the user authorized as a tamper-proof mandate. Google donated AP2 to the FIDO Alliance in April.
Stripe
Stripe and Tempo launched the Machine Payments Protocol on 18 March 2026. It targets the second job: paying for a service inside the same web request, by card, stablecoin or Lightning.
The open rails
- x402 moved from Coinbase to the Linux Foundation on 2 April 2026, with forty member organizations at launch, the card networks among them.
- L402 runs on Bitcoin's Lightning Network and has been in development at Lightning Labs since 2020.
- In September, Block joined the x402 Foundation and added Lightning support.
What to take from it
- These mostly stack, not compete. One protocol describes the shop, another proves authorization, another moves the money.
- The same names appear everywhere. Visa, Mastercard, Google and Stripe all sit in the x402 Foundation. Nobody is betting on a single winner.
- Choose by purchase size. Consumer-sized purchases suit cards. Sub-cent, high-volume calls suit Lightning or stablecoins.
A caution on forecasts: you will see projections of a trillion dollars or more in agent-driven commerce by 2030. They are projections. Current machine-to-machine volume is still small.
Noden sits in the second half of the map: agents buying capabilities per call, paid with credits or over Lightning. See how it works.
